Libraries as places for living citizen science

Opportunities and challenges of Citizen Science in libraries were discussed at the meeting of the national network Weiter.Bildung in St. Pölten

Libraries are lively places of learning and encounter where knowledge is not just passively absorbed, but can be actively shaped. Citizen science is an important building block in this context. Libraries not only provide spaces for carrying out co-research projects, but also offer good networking opportunities for interested people of all ages.

The OeAD was invited to this topic area at the meeting of the federal state network Weiter.Bildung in April 2025. The network is an initiative of the Austrian state working groups for adult education, the public library system and the responsible representatives from the offices of the state governments. Together with experts and decision-makers from all over Austria, there was an inspiring exchange about the potential of citizen science in libraries. Ideas for future formats in the different settings of larger and smaller libraries in urban and rural areas were also born, in particular for the Citizen Science Award. By cooperating with schools, youth groups and interested readers, libraries can make an important contribution to the promotion of Citizen Science and thus strengthen the active participation of citizens in science.
