The course provides practical guidance on how to integrate citizen science into teaching and how such projects connect to the five EU Missions on climate, cancer, oceans, smart cities, and soil. Teachers will have the opportunity to select projects, carry them out with their students, and address scientific questions of societal relevance.
Over the course of the MOOC, participants will become familiar with the core principles of citizen science and understand the added value this form of research brings to science, society, and education. They will learn how to evaluate projects using different criteria, how to select those suitable for their classroom, and how citizen science links to the European Missions. In addition, teachers will develop their own learning scenario based on a project that reflects the scientific inquiry process and places students’ active participation at the center.
The MOOC is structured into four consecutive modules, released weekly. The first module, starting on 13 October 2025, introduces citizen science and the five EU Missions. The second module, available from 20 October, focuses on choosing suitable projects for students. The third module, released on 27 October, deals with planning and implementing citizen science activities. The fourth module, starting on 3 November, addresses the assessment of student learning and the impact of the projects. Participation is flexible, and the submission of the final learning scenario along with peer reviews is possible until 19 November 2025 at 23:59 CET. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate.
The MOOC is developed within the framework of the EU-funded project CROPS, which aims to strengthen citizen science initiatives and increase their impact across Europe.
