What instruments are available to inform citizens from different areas about research processes and to take their ideas, views and concerns into account in political and scientific processes? A research project at the University of Tübingen, in which a citizens' council was held on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence and Freedom”, is investigating whether decisions are better made when not only scientific perspectives but also social opinions are included.
The participating citizens were drawn by lot and formed a diverse group in terms of age, gender, migration experience and educational background. The aim was to integrate the diversity of perspectives and life experiences into the decision-making process. Together, they asked themselves the question: “How can science and society work together to shape the future of artificial intelligence research?”
