Seda Adamyan awarded Prize for Best Presentation

Seda Adamyan, an APPEAR scholar at the Medical University of Vienna, presented her PhD research at the International Conference on Biodiversity, Conservation and Climate in Armenia in June 2026. Her presentation attracted considerable interest and discussion, particularly on the role of jackals as wildlife reservoirs and the potential of metagenomics for disease surveillance. In recognition of her outstanding presentation, Seda was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Prize.

First Insight into Nano pollution in Ethiopian Urban Rivers: Characterization and Co-occurrences

Mahder Mekonnen Shumi is an APPEAR scholar and aquatic ecology researcher. Based at BOKU University, her PhD focuses on metallic nanoparticles in Ethiopian urban rivers, advancing understanding of nano pollution in developing regions. She recently presented her first research findings at the Africa Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE) Annual Meeting 2026.

BOKU startet Projekt mit Bhutan und setzt Zusammenarbeit mit OeAD fort

Am 20. Mai 2026 unterzeichnete die BOKU einen historischen Kooperationsvertrag für das Projekt CAPFOR, eine Initiative zur Stärkung der nachhaltigen Forstwirtschaft in Bhutan. Mit Unterstützung des OeAD werden junge Forstexpertinnen und -experten ausgebildet und innovative Strategien für den Klimaschutz entwickelt.

Strengthening the AEEM Programme and Alumni Network in East Africa

For more than ten years, the International Joint MSc Programme in Aquatic Ecosystems and Environmental Management (AEEM) has trained experts in aquatic and environmental management and strengthened academic partnerships between East African and Austrian universities. A workshop on 24 April 2026 in Ethiopia was dedicated to reflection, networking, and strategic dialogue on the future of the programme and its growing alumni network.

Moges Wubet Shita, a PhD researcher and APPEAR scholar at Vienna University of Technology, explores the complex link between urbanization and housing in Ethiopia. PhD Research on Irrigation Effects on Yield and Nitrogen Dynamics in Grain Legumes

Gerald Kwikiriza completes his PhD at BOKU University, Austria

In January 2026, Gerald Kwikiriza successfully defended his PhD with distinction at BOKU University. His research explored how fish translocations and aquaculture practices shape genetic diversity and hybridization. The work has already resulted in five publications in peer-reviewed journals and is generating important insights to strengthen Nile tilapia breeding programs while supporting the conservation of endangered species across East Africa.
