Tadesse Fetahis connection with Austria began through the support of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), which enabled him to pursue his PhD studies at the University of Vienna, completed in 2010. His doctoral research, “Plankton Communities and Ecology of Tropical Lakes Hayq and Awasa, Ethiopia,” provided a strong scientific foundation for his lifelong commitment to aquatic ecosystem conservation, sustainable water resource management, and water security. This international academic experience significantly shaped his scientific vision and established long-lasting collaborations between Ethiopian and European institutions.

Following his PhD, Prof. Tadesse received a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Konstanz, Germany (2014–2017), further strengthening his expertise in aquatic ecology and ecosystem management and his connection with Europe.

Today, Prof. Tadesse is widely recognized as one of Ethiopia’s leading aquatic scientists. His research focuses on water quality, aquatic food webs, eutrophication, heavy metal pollution, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration. Using advanced scientific approaches such as stable isotope geochemistry, Ecopath with Ecosim modeling, and wetland carbon and methane flux analysis, his work addresses critical environmental challenges associated with climate change, ecosystem degradation, and water insecurity. His research contributes directly to sustainable aquatic resource management for food security, environmental resilience, and biodiversity conservation. To date, he has published more than 56 peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journals and authored the textbook Aquatic Science and Wetland Management, which has been adopted as course material across Ethiopian public universities.

Reflecting his strong commitment to international collaboration and capacity development, Prof. Tadesse has maintained longstanding academic and research partnerships with Austrian institutions through various research, training, and educational initiatives. He currently serves as the Global South Coordinator of the International Joint MSc Program in Aquatic Ecosystems and Environmental Management (AEEM), hosted at Addis Ababa University’s College of Natural and Computational Sciences. The AEEM program represents a highly successful North–South–South collaboration involving Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University, Egerton University (Kenya), the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), and BOKU University (Austria).

The program integrates international expertise, laboratory facilities, and practical field-based training to prepare the next generation of environmental scientists and water resource professionals. Over the years, AEEM has awarded more than 60 scholarships, with at least 40% reserved for qualified women, reflecting a strong commitment to gender equity and inclusive scientific capacity building.

The AEEM program has produced remarkable outcomes. Many graduates now serve in universities, research institutions, government agencies, and environmental organizations, while more than 40% are pursuing PhD studies. AEEM graduates are also recognized for their strong research productivity, with students publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers as part of their training.

Beyond his scientific and educational contributions, Prof. Tadesse has played a transformative leadership role in strengthening Addis Ababa University’s research ecosystem. From 2019 to 2025, he served as Director for Research at Addis Ababa University, leading major institutional reforms aimed at modernizing research governance, improving scientific quality, and promoting research and publication culture.

Under his leadership, more than 20 research policies and guidelines were developed and implemented. He introduced multidisciplinary research funding schemes such as the Senior Research Award, Early Career Researchers Fund, and the AAU Women’s Research Fund. He also led the digitization of research and grant administration through the university’s in-house Research Management System (RMS).

Prof. Tadesse further spearheaded Addis Ababa University’s first comprehensive laboratory inventory and core-laboratory establishment initiatives, helping strengthen institutional research infrastructure. His efforts significantly enhanced the visibility and quality of AAU-hosted journals, and supported the indexing of several journals in reputable international databases. In addition, he institutionalized college-level Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), annual grant-writing and research ethics Training-of-Trainers (ToT) programs, and university-wide research dissemination initiatives including Research Annual Book.

Prof. Tadesse was also a founding member of the Ethiopian Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Association (EFASA) and served as President of the association for two terms, contributing significantly to the advancement of aquatic sciences, professional networking, and scientific collaboration in Ethiopia.

From an ADC-supported doctoral student in Vienna to becoming a leading scientist, educator, and institutional reformer in East Africa, Professor Tadesse Fetahi’s journey demonstrates how international academic partnerships can foster scientific excellence, strengthen institutions, and contribute to sustainable regional development. His work continues to advance water security, ecosystem resilience, and the development of future scientific leaders across Africa.
