In 2017, the team of the APPEAR-sponsored project on the Promotion of Professional Social Work in East Africa (PROSOWO) launched a regional Centre for Research and Innovation in Social Work (CRISOWO), hosted at Makerere University, Uganda.
In June 2021, the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) Capacity Building Committee and the Board of IASSW granted a Regional Resource Centre (RRC) status to Makerere University hosted at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration. While this RRC will primarily serve the East African region, its benefits are envisaged to extend to the rest of Africa because it is the first RRC in the African context. Dr. Janestic Twikirize, regional representative of CRISOWO, had this to say on this achieved milestone: "The Regional Resource Centre operationalizes the vision and purpose of the East Africa Centre for Research and Innovation – CRISOWO. In partnership with the Association of Schools of Social Work in Africa, the RRC will spearhead capacity building initiatives for social work education in East Africa."
The official launch of this prestigious initiative will be online on Thursday 24 June 2021 from 2-4pm EAT.
