Panel Discussion - World Food Day 2016

Together with three other panellists Sara spoke about several issues that included the structure of the agricultural sector in Africa, local food supply and food security and the soy production in reference to other economic sectors. Besides dimensions of land grabbing and land degradation as well as the coherence needed between the development and the economic sector were discussed. Sara shared a thought on how development cooperation could now be shelved for global partnerships, solidarity and fair use of resources in order to enhance international relationships that are meaningful. By using an example from Northern Uganda she highlighted the gender perspective in African agriculture that is dominated by small holder farmers of which the greatest percentage are young women.

Sara Kaweesa is a PhD student at the Centre for Development Research / University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) in Austria. Her research is on effective strategies for scaling out conservation agriculture and it will be carried out in Karamoja, Northern Uganda. Before her studies she convened and worked for a conservation organisation.
