Exchange Experience at FH Kärnten – A Transformative Semester in Austria

By Sabahat Jaffar

When I arrived in Villach for my exchange semester at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (FH Kärnten), I knew I was stepping into something new — but I did not yet realise how deeply this experience would shape me academically, professionally, and personally.

My Studies and Academic Path

During my exchange, I studied in the Green Transition Engineering (GTE) programme at FH Kärnten. Coming from a Software Engineering background, I was particularly interested in how digital technologies, data science, and sustainability intersect. The programme’s interdisciplinary structure — combining environmental sciences, data engineering, and sustainable systems — felt like the perfect bridge between my technical interests and my desire to contribute to meaningful global challenges.

Currently, I am completing my Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, and I plan to focus my future work on AI-driven and data-based applications related to sustainability and energy efficiency. My exchange semester in Austria significantly strengthened this direction. It helped me see how digital tools can be used not just for innovation, but for environmental responsibility and real-world impact.

Why Austria and FH Kärnten?

I came to Austria as an OeAD scholarship holder under the Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). Austria attracted me because of its strong commitment to sustainability and high-quality applied education. FH Kärnten stood out because of its practical orientation and close interaction between students and lecturers. Studying at a Fachhochschule was a new experience for me — the teaching style was highly interactive, hands-on, and project-based.

One of the most meaningful parts of my academic experience was the course “Data Acquisition Tools and Methods,” where we conducted fieldwork, worked with geospatial tools, and created an ArcGIS Story Map project focused on citizen science and biodiversity. It was fascinating to see how technology, environmental monitoring, and community participation can come together.

Beyond technical skills, I gained confidence in working in an international academic environment and learned to adapt quickly to new tools and systems.

Personal Growth and Cultural Experience

Living and studying in Austria pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. Adjusting to a new education system, working with unfamiliar software, and even adapting to Austria’s winter climate were small but meaningful challenges. Each one taught me resilience and independence.

One of my favorite memories was representing Pakistan during International Day. Sharing my culture through a traditional sweet dish and connecting with students from around the world reminded me how powerful intercultural exchange can be.

This exchange semester helped me grow more confident, open-minded, and adaptable. It showed me that stepping into unfamiliar environments is where real growth happens.

Looking Ahead

In the future, I aim to contribute to sustainable digital innovation in Pakistan, where there is enormous potential for technology-driven environmental solutions. I see international exchange not as a one-time experience, but as a mindset — one that encourages collaboration across borders, cultures, and disciplines.

To future exchange students, I would say: say yes to opportunities that challenge you. The experience may feel overwhelming at first, but it will shape you in ways you cannot predict. Be curious, be open, and make the most of every moment.

My semester at FH Kärnten was more than an academic exchange — it was a milestone in my personal and professional journey. I am deeply grateful to OeAD and everyone at FH Kärnten who made this experience possible.
