CitSci Sort is a collaborative online tool from the Spanish Ibercivis Foundation that is building a comprehensive and transparently classified collection of scientific abstracts in the field of citizen science. It is based on a systematic literature review, which is now being further developed through contributions from a broad community.
Participants read abstracts and categorize them according to clear criteria. Among other things, a distinction is made between whether citizen science is used as a research method or is itself the subject of investigation. In addition, thematic focuses and mentioned digital infrastructures such as platforms or apps are recorded. In this way, an evidence-based map of the citizen science landscape is being created step by step.
No special prior knowledge is required to participate. Careful handling of the texts is crucial. Since each abstract is evaluated by several people, a collaboratively supported and reliable overall picture emerges.
CitSci Sort helps to make citizen science more comparable and visible, and creates an important foundation for the further development of the field at the European level.
The tool was developed as part of the Horizon Europe project RIECS-Concept, in which the OeAD Centre for Citizen Science is also involved.
