Butterfly Researchers from Schwertberg at the Citizen Science Award

Through their participation in the Citizen Science Award, children and teenagers at the Schwertberg Library are making a valuable contribution to biodiversity research.

As part of the Citizen Science Award project “On the Trail of Butterflies,” children and teens observe, photograph, and report native butterflies. In this way, they contribute to science and nature conservation. The youth group has already documented more than 270 butterfly species in Schwertberg, Perg, and Luftenberg—including the peacock butterfly, the ox-eye, the karst white, the small tortoiseshell, the red admiral, and the map butterfly. Every reported sighting expands the scientific database on the distribution of native butterflies—the collected data is used to compile the Red List of Austrian butterflies. At the same time, this earns the library group points in the research competition—please keep your fingers crossed!
