The aim of the research project On the Trail of Butterflies is to compile a nationwide record of native butterflies in Austria. The sightings documented by participants are reviewed by experts and are used, amongst other things, to compile the current Red List of Butterflies in Austria.
The children and young people photograph butterflies, record sighting data and thereby make a direct contribution to biodiversity research and nature conservation. The project combines scientific data collection with environmental education and provides young people with accessible entry into research processes.
This involvement builds on the Schwertberg Library’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, nature and science education, and STEM education. Through their participation, the youth group demonstrates the potential that libraries can fulfil as venues for citizen science and science communication.
