The event centred on the joint ‘research journey’, as described and vividly presented by the participating researchers and the pupils. The project explored how maths lessons can be more closely linked to socially relevant and real-life topics. The focus was on an interdisciplinary approach that connects maths with issues that concern young people in their everyday lives and in society. Particularly impressive was the close collaboration between the school and the research community, which gave the pupils an active insight into research processes.
Petra Siegele, Head of the OeAD’s Public Science Division, gave a keynote talk on “Citizen Science in the Classroom”. In addition to sharing their personal experiences, the researchers also provided an outlook on the upcoming phase of data evaluation and scientific analysis. The event impressively demonstrated how participatory research can build bridges between academia, schools and social engagement.
