Beyond Professional Life: Growing with Purpose and Greening the Future

Dr. Sony Baral Gauli is a prominent green economist, educator, researcher, and academic leader whose professional achievements have significantly advanced sustainable forest management, green economic development, and climate resilience in Nepal. In 2025 she was awarded with the prestigious national award "Women in Science and Technology Award".

Dr. Sony Baral Gauli has more than two decades of experience in generating knowledge, mentoring future professionals, and strengthening the connection between science, policy, and community development, she currently acts as the Director of the School of Forestry & Natural Resource Management at the Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

In 2025 she was awarded with the prestigious national award “Women in Science and Technology Award 2025”, as decided by the Prime Minister of Nepal, from the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). The award was conferred by the education minister during the 43rd Anniversary Celebration of NAST on 6 December 2025. This acknowledgment highlights her long-standing work in forestry research, she always promotes forest as a “biological supermarket”, promoting a green economy, community stewardship, and climate-resilient development.

A proud alumna of BOKU University Vienna, Austria and OeAD scholar, Dr. Baral Gauli has conducted extensive research on the economic valuation of forest resources, socio-ecological systems, community forestry governance, and human well-being. Her scholarly work has contributed to evidence-based policymaking and sustainable natural resource management practices in Nepal and beyond. Her doctoral studies at BOKU were financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation.

Dr. Baral Gauli was featured in the book Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Advancing SDGs in Asia, among other inspirational 49 female scientists from Asia making significant contributions towards realizing the SDGs. She was featured on the SDGs 3 for quality education. The book was launched during the 58th KAST International Symposium and the 4th AASSA-WISE Symposium in Seoul, Republic of Korea. This was another international recognition of her contributions to science, sustainability, and women's leadership in STEM in addition to her contributions in research and academia.

Dr. Baral Gauli is an ardent supporter of using scientific findings in policy formulation and helping the community through sustainable resource management and use. She believes that learning does not only entail transferring knowledge to individuals but also creating individuals who can ask questions, think critically, and reason for solutions for their future. Her educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that knowledge alone is inadequate, and therefore learners require other capabilities such as skills, creativity, and leadership among others to handle the modern world issues.

As an educator, mentor, and researcher, she has inspired scores of students to become future leaders, researchers, and practitioners in forestry, environmental management, and sustainable development. She continues to help bridge the gap between science and society by being committed to teaching, researching, and engaging with communities, thus helping to create a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for all. 

Dr. Baral Gauli’s journey from the rural community forests in Nepal to international scientific platforms reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing science, empowering communities, inspiring future generations, and building a greener and more equitable and sustainable world.
