Young Armenian researcher Shoghik Ghazaryan from Yerevan State University successfully completed an intensive short-term training in population genomics at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna. The training, titled “Methods and Applications of Population Genomics Analysis”, took place from 23 January 23 to 20 February under the supervision of Prof. Gabor Meszaros. It was conducted within the APPEAR project Strengthening Genetic Biocontrol Capacities under Climate Change in Armenia.

The programme not only strengthened her expertise in studying biodiversity but also sparked new avenues for international collaboration and future joint research initiatives between Armenia and Austria.

During the one-month training, Shoghik Ghazaryan gained both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in modern population genomics. The knowledge and skills acquired during the training are highly relevant for studying Armenia’s rich biodiversity.

Following her return, Shoghik Ghazaryan presented the outcomes of the training at the annual scientific meeting of the Faculty of Biology at Yerevan State University. The presentation attracted wide interest among specialists, highlighting the applicability of genomic approaches across multiple biological disciplines.

The experience has also laid the groundwork for future collaboration between Armenian institutions and BOKU University. Planned follow-up activities include additional training opportunities, joint research initiatives, and potential pathways for double-degree or PhD programme.

Shoghik Ghazaryan completed her Master’s degree in Biology, with a focus on Zoology and Parasitology, in 2025, demonstrating a strong academic focus and commitment to scientific excellence. Driven by her interest in population genomics and her future career aspirations in this field, she was selected to participate in a specialised training under the APPEAR Programme at BOKU. Her involvement reflects both her growing expertise and her dedication to advancing research in modern genomic sciences.
