The current edition of Welt im Ohr focuses on justice – a central element of sustainable development and one of the three main topics of the upcoming 9th Austrian Development Conference (#ET2025), which will take place at the University of Innsbruck from 21 to 23 November. Together with peace and strong institutions justice forms the core of SDG 16, the Sustainable Development Goal dedicated to an inclusive, just and peaceful society.
But it is precisely these goals that are coming under increasing pressure: All over the world we see the rise of authoritarian tendencies, the dismantling of democratic structures and attacks on independent institutions – for example in the USA and in several Latin American countries, where our guests today come from and where they have gained their experience. This raises the question: how effective is the promise of ‘leaving no one behind’ when social inequality, violence and power asymmetries continue to increase?
Against this backdrop we take a closer look at global justice today. What part do science, feminist movements and indigenous resistance play? How can genuine cooperation on an equal footing, as practised in the APPEAR programme, be achieved? And what is needed for education, research and civil society to work together to contribute to a more just world?
