Event Summary: 15th S-DHG Forum 2025

Around 60 participants from funding agencies and organisations across Europe and around the world came together for the 15th S-DHG Forum 2025 – the Forum of the Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Group (S-DHG), which took place in November 2025 at OeAD in Vienna. The meeting focused on a central challenge: how to communicate the value of higher education cooperation with the Global South during a time of increasing global uncertainty, shrinking budgets, and shifting political priorities.

Event Report | APPEAR in practice 21 – Women’s Right to the City in Ethiopia and Mozambique

The 21st edition of the APPEAR in practice series, which took place on 10 June 2025, focused on gender-sensitive urban transformation in informal settlements and slums in Ethiopia and Mozambique. The event presented key results from the ongoing GIRT project – Strengthening Research and Educational Competences of HEIs for Gender-sensitive Urban (InfoRmal Settlement) Transformation –, a collaboration between universities in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University and Mekelle University), Mozambique (Lúrio University) and Austria (University for Continuing Education Krems). The project examines the housing and living conditions of women in the rapidly urbanising environments in Ethiopia and Mozambique, with the aim of strengthening the research and teaching capacities of the participating institutions.

Join us on 10 June 2025 at OeAD for a multifaceted event as we share highlights of the GIRT project in Ethiopia and Mozambique. We present the results of our qualitative research with women in informal settlements and slums in four cities and delve into the housing-related challenges, tenure insecurity, urban redevelopment and women’s coping strategies.

APPEAR in practice 20 | Strengthening Organic Agriculture in Armenia

The event on 24 April 2025 at OeAD presented the outcomes of the APPEAR project “Strengthening Organic Agriculture in Armenia”, it also addressed the future of organic farming in Armenia, focusing on education, research, and outreach. Special emphasis was placed on the institutional impact, key contributions to the organic sector, and the ongoing cooperation between the Armenian National Agrarian University and BOKU University.

APPEAR in practice_15: Transdisciplinary approaches for university-community cooperation

Project partners from BOKU Vienna, Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU), Tbilisi State University (TSU), and IMC FH Krems presented their project, its results and outcomes and the network they established in the Caucasus region. Furthermore, recent PhD graduate and APPEAR alumni Lela Khartishvili from Georgia and current APPEAR scholarship holder Tigran Keryan from Armenia introduced the recently published manual for university lecturers.

APPEAR in practice_4

The art of creating spaces for rural and urban communities - Examples from Nicaragua and Palestine: The two appear projects RURAL_DEV in Palestine and URBAN_MANAGUA in Nicaragua both aim at enhancing the local communities' quality of life through spatial planning measures for rural and urban environments, respectively. Similarities and differences in the projects’ approaches shall be identified and the limits and possibilities for social and political changes be discussed.
