Important Information

Researchers from third countries who are in possession of a residence permit for "Special cases of gainful employment" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung "Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätiger") or a residence permit "Researcher" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung "Forscher") may carry out this activity, which is not subject to the regulations of the Austrian Act Governing Employment of Foreign Nationals, without any further permit.
Both residence permits are only issued for activities that are not subject to the regulations of the Austrian Act Governing Employment of Foreign Nationals. Beyond these activities no other employment is permitted.

People with a residence permit "Family" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung „Familiengemeinschaft“) are only allowed to work in Austria if their residence permit bears the endorsement "free access to the labour market (freier Arbeitsmarktzugang)". This only applies to family members of researchers who have a residence permit "Researcher" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung "Forscher") or a residence permit "Special cases of gainful employment" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung "Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätigkeit").

People holding other residence titles (residence permits or settlement permits) should enquire at the authority dealing with the rights and status of aliens or one of the advice organisations.

People with a visa C or visa D are in principle not allowed to work in Austria. People with a visa D are only allowed to start an employment which has been authorized by the employment office or which is not subject to the regulations of the Austrian Act Governing Employment of Foreign Nationals. If you intend to work you have to state this when applying for the visa.
